Designer Monokinis - What you need to know

A monokini is, in essence, the combination of a bikini and a one-piece, where the top and bottom are connected usually via the middle torso.

Shop all Monokinis here.

Often referred to as monokini swimsuits, monokini one-piece, monokini bathing suits, or trikinis, this sexy cutout style has been the darling of 2008 swimwear designers and shows no signs of disappearing for 2009. We love the monokini because the different designs and variations that can be created from a monokini make each style original, trendy and very very sexy. Monokini swimsuits are most often designer styles, and are available as halter, bandeau, ring top and bottom, v-neck, or triangle.

monokini swimsuits

Designer monokinis are perfect for proportionate body shapes, usually looking best on hour-glass shaped bodies and medium to large torsos. Celebrities known to love monokinis are Giselle Bundchen, Jessica Alba, and Britney Spears. The reason proportionate bodies look better in monokini bathing suits is that the suit only comes in one size. So, whereas a woman who wears a C cup and has a petite bottom can buy a bikini separates size Large Top and Small bottom, she is not able to choose distinct bottom and top sizes on monokini styles.

The idea behind monokini one-pieces is to create a style that is unique but still sexy, and new designers love to incorporate their trendy fashions into cutout styles. The great thing about monokinis is that most look exactly like a bikini from the back, but the two-piece connects in the front. Trendy swimwear hardware such as rings and closures, embroidered tops, metallic fabrics, and colorful prints are all included in the monokini bathing suits.

Some designers however, get creative in monokini styles and bring back the retro look with a chic twist, as shown below:

monokini swimsuits, maaji cutout

In this designer suit by Maaji Swimwear, the monokini has a sort of inverted style. The torso is covered on the sides but open in the belly button area, then criss crossed in the ribcage area and turned into a triangle top. A truly original monokini one-piece that was sold out on the first month after we got it!

Our wide selection of swimwear styles includes monokini swimsuits galore. All of our current swimsuit designers have at least one monokini style to showcase, and as a result, cutout swimsuits have become our best-sellers. Look for these monokinis in our designer one-piece section.
