Ok, so here’s a bit of trivia on the monokini one piece. In 1964, the first monokini was designed here in the US by an Austrian-American fashion designer, Rudi Gernerich. It first appeared in Look magazine as part of an article about futuristic fashions.
We already told you about how Zoe Duchesne wore the fabulous Bendito [...]

What does the word “bikini” mean, anyway? Does “bi” stand for “two” and “kini” stand for piece? You might think so (we certainly did!), but it’s not true at all. The word “bikini” comes from the name of a Micronesian island named Bikini Atoll. And the bikini wasn’t even invented there – it was invented [...]

Take a cruise today, and it’s nothing special to have a heated pool on board – or two, or three and several hot tubs! But you can imagine that it wasn’t always this way – Christopher Columbus obviously didn’t cross the ocean blue while lounging in a deck chair in his swimwear, sipping mai tais! [...]

Back in the 1800s, hanging out at the beach had an entirely different meaning and method. Not wanting to violate the Victorian practices of being “proper,” men and women sea-bathed separately. It was a pretty big “no-no” for each sex to see the other wading in the water in swimwear — even though that swimwear [...]

If you’ve ever jumped in to the water with your t shirt on, you know how long regular clothes take to dry. Sadly, the women in the 50s had to put up with that feeling every time they went swimming. Why? Well, the very stretchy material that is now vital in all swimwear, spandex, didn’t really exist [...]

The bikini is clearly a favorite in fashionable and designer swimwear. And for some of you bikini lovers, and us here at The Orchid Boutique, you can’t get enough bikini trivia and history. Did you know that the first Miss World Pageant in 1951 was first officially called the Festival Bikini Contest? However, because of opposition to being judged wearing the two-piece in the competition, the bikini was banned from the Miss World Pageant for two decades after that. Contestants in Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA were first allowed to don bikinis in 1997 — a look that’s been around for thousands of years was only allowed 12 years ago!
